Day 9 — What We Believe: The Core of the Christian Faith

Today’s Passage: John 16:7-15

Jesus is hours away from the cross. His disciples are confused and grieving. He tells them He is leaving, and they naturally assume this is a disaster. Jesus counters their fear with a startling fact. His departure is a distinct advantage for them.

He explains this advantage by introducing the Holy Spirit. Up to this point, Jesus has been with them physically in one place at one time. When He leaves, He will send the Spirit to dwell inside every believer everywhere.

The Spirit has specific work to do on earth. Jesus outlines a twofold mission. The Spirit convicts the world of its guilt, and He guides us into the truth about Christ. You see a courtroom dynamic here. The Spirit presents the evidence of who Jesus is, dismantles the world’s false verdicts, and leads Christ’s followers into absolute certainty.

Context The Upper Room Discourse

Jesus speaks these words during His final meal with the disciples, recorded in John chapters 13 through 17. The setting is intimate and urgent. Judas has already left to betray Him. The remaining eleven men are terrified about the future. Jesus uses these final hours to prepare them for His death, His resurrection, and the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

John 16:7-11 (BSB)

⁷ But I tell you the truth, it is for your benefit that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. ⁸ And when He comes, He will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: ⁹ in regard to sin, because they do not believe in Me; ¹⁰ in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see Me; ¹¹ and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world has been condemned.

Jesus presents the Spirit as a prosecuting attorney against a rebellious world. The Spirit exposes three facts. First, He exposes the root of all sin, which is the refusal to believe in Jesus. Second, He exposes true righteousness. The world condemned Jesus as a criminal, but the Father vindicated Him by welcoming Him back to heaven. Third, the Spirit exposes the reality of judgment. Satan, the prince of this world, has already lost his case, and the cross guarantees his defeat.

Word study "Advocate", Parakletos (John 16:7)

Greek: παράκλητος (Paraklētos), pronounced par-AK-lay-tos. Strong’s G3875. This legal term describes a defender, an intercessor, or a helper called to someone’s side. In a Roman court, a parakletos stood by the accused to provide counsel and strength. Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit will stand permanently by your side to support you and argue the truth of Christ to a hostile world.

John 16:12-15 (BSB)

¹² I still have much to tell you, but you cannot yet bear to hear it. ¹³ However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak what He hears, and He will declare to you what is to come. ¹⁴ He will glorify Me by taking from what is Mine and disclosing it to you. ¹⁵ Everything that belongs to the Father is Mine. That is why I said that the Spirit will take from what is Mine and disclose it to you.

The disciples are overwhelmed. They lack the capacity to process everything Jesus wants to teach them in that single night. Jesus assures them that the Spirit of truth will finish their education. The perfect unity of the Trinity stands behind that promise, because the Father, the Son, and the Spirit share all things. The Spirit delivers a consistent message. He takes the objective facts about Jesus and makes them clear to the minds of believers.

Study notes The Spirit Testifies

The Holy Spirit points the spotlight directly onto Jesus to prove His identity.

"When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father—He will testify about Me." John 15:26 (BSB)

The Holy Spirit is the ultimate witness for the defense. He convicts the world of its error and guides us into the truth about Christ. You can rely entirely on the Advocate living inside you to understand the Bible and to explain it to someone else. Read a single chapter of the Gospel of John today. Before you read, ask the Spirit to take the historical facts about Jesus and make them undeniable to your mind, and He will do exactly what Jesus promised.
