Day 7 — What We Believe: The Core of the Christian Faith

Today’s Passage: Luke 24:36-49

The disciples are locked in a room in Jerusalem. They are exchanging reports about an empty tomb and sightings on the road. The atmosphere is tense with confusion and fear.

Suddenly, Jesus appears in the room. The immediate reaction is terror. The disciples think they are seeing a hallucination or a spirit.

Jesus steps forward to offer physical proof. He speaks to them. He invites them to touch His skin and bone. The risen Jesus is no ghost; He is the evidence that God raised Him. This bodily resurrection forms the solid foundation of the Christian faith.

Context Hallucinations and Expectations

First-century Jews believed in spirits, but a bodily resurrection in the middle of history fell entirely outside their theology. A hallucination requires an expectation or a deeply held psychological wish. The disciples expected a dead Messiah. Jesus provides hard proof to overcome their absolute certainty that dead men stay dead.

Luke 24:36-40 (BSB)

³⁶ While they were describing these events, Jesus Himself stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” ³⁷ But they were startled and frightened, thinking they had seen a spirit. ³⁸ “Why are you troubled,” Jesus asked, “and why do doubts arise in your hearts? ³⁹ Look at My hands and My feet. It is I Myself. Touch Me and see—for a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.” ⁴⁰ And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and feet.

Jesus directly confronts their doubts with empirical evidence. He invites them to use their physical senses. Sight, hearing, and touch all verify His bodily presence. A spirit lacks flesh and bone. Jesus possesses both. He retains the scars of His execution to prove His identity.

Luke 24:41-43 (BSB)

⁴¹ While they were still in disbelief because of their joy and amazement, He asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” ⁴² So they gave Him a piece of broiled fish, ⁴³ and He took it and ate it in front of them.

Joy produces its own kind of shock. The disciples wonder if this reality is too good to be true. Jesus offers an undeniable biological proof. A living physical body consumes food. He asks for fish and eats it in front of them. The digestive process of a living organism proves the resurrection is a physical fact.

Word study "witnesses", martys (Luke 24:48)

Greek: μάρτυς (martys), pronounced MAR-toos. Strong’s G3144. This legal term describes a person who testifies to facts they have personally seen or heard. The disciples take the stand to report a historical event they verified with their own eyes and hands.

Luke 24:44-49 (BSB)

⁴⁴ Jesus said to them, “These are the words I spoke to you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms.” ⁴⁵ Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. ⁴⁶ And He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, ⁴⁷ and in His name repentance and forgiveness of sins will be proclaimed to all nations, beginning in Jerusalem. ⁴⁸ You are witnesses of these things. ⁴⁹ And behold, I am sending the promise of My Father upon you. But remain in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

Physical evidence pairs with prophetic evidence. Jesus aligns His bodily resurrection with the entire Old Testament record. He opens their minds to see history unfolding exactly as God promised. They carry a message of repentance and forgiveness to the world based on these facts. They will receive divine power to deliver it.

Study notes The Eyewitness Standard

The apostles built their entire ministry on the physical reality of the resurrection. John later opened his first letter by emphasizing this exact standard of empirical proof.

"That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our own eyes, which we have gazed upon and touched with our own hands—this is the Word of life." 1 John 1:1 (BSB)

The physical resurrection changes everything. Jesus defeated death in real time, in a real physical body. You can anchor your trust in this historical reality. Take ten minutes today to write down the specific physical proofs Jesus offered in this room. Keep that list in your Bible. Use it the next time you face a doubt or someone questions the foundation of your faith.
