Today’s Passage: Psalm 125
This is a song of the road, sung by pilgrims on their way up to Jerusalem. Those who trust in the LORD, it says, are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved. The hills that ring the city are real, and so is the surrounding the psalm draws out from them.
As you read, hold this: The LORD surrounds His people, both now and forevermore.
Context A real ring of hills
Jerusalem sits in a bowl of higher ground, with the Mount of Olives rising to the east and other ridges standing on the sides that remain. A pilgrim walking up the road would have seen that ring with his own eyes. The psalm does not invent the skyline; it simply names what the road already showed.
Psalm 125:1-2 (BSB)
A song of ascents. ¹ Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion. It cannot be moved; it abides forever. ² As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds His people, both now and forevermore.
Like Zion, then: unmoved, and abiding forever. And then comes the comparison the psalm has been reaching for. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD sabab, pronounced sah-VEEV. Strong's H5439, surrounding, on every side, all around. This is not a wall thrown up in a single direction but a complete ring, closed all the way around. The geography itself does the work: real hills, a real enclosure. And the LORD’s presence around His people is told to us in exactly the same way. His people, now and forevermore. The whole of time is set beside the whole of the ring.

³ For the scepter of the wicked will not rest upon the land allotted to the righteous, so that the righteous will not put forth their hands to injustice.
Study notes So that they will not put forth their hands
The surrounding has a purpose. Wicked rule will not be allowed to settle in and stay, for prolonged pressure can slowly wear a people down until they take up the same injustice themselves. So the LORD sets a limit on how long the scepter is permitted to rest.
"No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide an escape, so that you can stand up under it." 1 Corinthians 10:13 (BSB)
He is faithful, and He provides the way of escape, so that His people can stand. The LORD surrounds His people, both now and forevermore.
Psalm 125:4-5 (BSB)
⁴ Do good, O LORD, to those who are good, and to the upright in heart. ⁵ But those who turn to crooked ways the LORD will banish with the evildoers. Peace be upon Israel.
Do good, the psalm prays, to those who are good; but those who turn aside to crooked ways the LORD will banish along with the evildoers. And then comes a quiet last line: peace be upon Israel. The surrounding ends in a blessing.
