Today’s Passage: An Overview of the Whole Book
Exodus ends with a tent in the middle of the camp, and the glory of the LORD fills it so full that Moses cannot walk in. Then the LORD calls him from inside that tent and tells Israel how a holy God can live among them. That is this book. It is not a pile of rules stacked for their own sake. It is a way — offerings, priests, clean and unclean, a day when atonement is made for the whole people, and then a life that matches the God who has moved in.
As you read, hold this: The holy God makes a way to dwell with His people.
The Hebrew title is the book’s first word. וַיִּקְרָא (vayikra), pronounced va-YIK-ra. Strong’s H7121. “And He called.” The LORD called. Moses did not climb up with a plan of his own. He was summoned from the Tent of Meeting that had just been raised, and the voice that filled the tent now teaches the people how to come near.
The book walks in a clear line.
- Leviticus 1–7. Offerings. What is brought, how it is handled, what goes up, and what is eaten.
- Leviticus 8–10. Priests. Aaron and his sons are dressed and set apart. Fire comes from the LORD. Two sons bring fire He did not ask for.
- Leviticus 11–15. Clean and unclean. Food, birth, skin, houses. How a holy camp stays a camp He can walk in.
- Leviticus 16. The Day of Atonement. One day. Blood behind the veil. A goat that carries sin away.
- Leviticus 17–27. Holy life, feasts, and vows. Be holy, because He is. Keep His statutes. He will walk among you.
This wave is Leviticus 1–7. You may sit with several chapters in one sitting. Keep the order. The next offering makes more sense when you have heard the one before it.
The world of the book
The people are at Sinai. The tabernacle has just been finished, and the glory of the LORD has filled it.
"Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle." Exodus 40:34 (BSB)
The book does not hand you a year. It places you there: a tent, a courtyard, an altar, and a people who have come out of Egypt and now have God in the middle of them.
Moses is the man Scripture names. Jesus speaks of Moses. The man is historical and real.
"If you had believed Moses, you would believe Me, because he wrote about Me." John 5:46 (BSB)
The blood in this book is not a stage picture we are meant to grow out of. A life is given in the place of a life. That is how a holy God makes a way to dwell with a people who are not holy in themselves. The book means it.
The verses the book stands on
The LORD tells Moses what to say to the whole congregation.
"Speak to the whole congregation of Israel and tell them: Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy." Leviticus 19:2 (BSB)
In the middle of the book a day is set when atonement is made for them all.
"because on this day atonement will be made for you to cleanse you, and you will be clean from all your sins before the LORD." Leviticus 16:30 (BSB)
And the reason the tent stands in the camp at all is this promise.
"I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be My people." Leviticus 26:12 (BSB)
Be holy. Atonement will be made. I will walk among you. That is the book. That is why we start here.
