Day 1 — First Steps: What Now?

Today’s Passage: John 10:27-30

Jesus stands in the temple colonnade during winter. A crowd of religious leaders circles Him, demanding clear evidence about whether He is the Messiah. He points to the evidence He has already given through His miracles. Then He explains why they refuse to believe the facts right in front of them. They do not belong to His flock.

From there, Jesus describes the people who do belong to Him. He lays down a clear, objective guarantee for anyone who follows Him. Your security as a believer rests entirely on the grip of God. Once you belong to Him, no one can take you out of His hand. You rely completely on the strength of the Shepherd.

Context The Feast of Dedication

Jesus speaks these words during Hanukkah, a festival celebrating the rededication of the temple after a foreign king defiled it. The Jewish leaders want a military Messiah to deliver them from the Romans, just as the Maccabees delivered them from the Syrians. Jesus offers a different kind of deliverance. He promises eternal security from spiritual death, a rescue achieved entirely through His divine authority.

John 10:27 (BSB)

²⁷ My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me.

Jesus identifies His followers with three distinct facts. First, they listen to His voice. Second, He knows them intimately. Third, they follow His direction. A relationship with Christ involves active attention and movement. You hear the truth, and you respond to it.

John 10:28 (BSB)

²⁸ I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them out of My hand.

Here Jesus issues an absolute promise. He grants eternal life as a free gift. Because the life He gives is eternal, it remains secure forever. He backs this up with an unbreakable statement of protection. Enemies will attack you, but they cannot remove you from the grip of Jesus.

Word study "snatch", harpazō (John 10:28)

Greek: ἁρπάζω (harpazō), pronounced har-PAD-zo. Strong’s G726. This verb means to seize by force, to steal, or to carry off suddenly. A predator uses this kind of violent force to drag a sheep away from the flock. Jesus guarantees that no hostile power possesses enough force to break His hold on you.

John 10:29-30 (BSB)

²⁹ My Father who has given them to Me is greater than all. No one can snatch them out of My Father’s hand. ³⁰ I and the Father are one.”

Jesus adds a second layer of security. God the Father gives believers to the Son. The Father possesses supreme power over the entire universe. Jesus states outright that He and the Father operate with absolute unity in purpose and power. You are held by the Son, and you are held by the Father. Your security rests in the unmatched strength of the Creator.

Study notes The Father's Will

Jesus confirms this same promise earlier in His ministry. He stakes His own success on keeping every single person the Father entrusts to Him.

"And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that I shall lose none of those He has given Me, but raise them up at the last day." John 6:39 (BSB)

You can build your life on this bedrock fact. God holds you securely. No one can take you out of His hand. Because your position is secure, you can stop operating out of fear and start listening closely for the Shepherd’s voice. Take five minutes today to sit in a room by yourself without any distractions. State out loud the specific worries weighing on your mind, and then verbally hand those anxieties over to the God who holds you tight.
