Today’s Passage: Matthew 6:19-21
Jesus has been teaching the crowd on the mountain about giving, praying, and fasting done quietly for God alone. Now He turns to the things people work so hard to hold onto. In just three short verses, He asks one gentle question: where are you keeping what you love most?
As you read, hold this: Store up treasure in heaven, because your heart will always follow whatever you treasure.

¹⁹ Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. ²⁰ But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.
Jesus sets two storerooms side by side. One is on earth, and everything in it is fragile. Moths chew through fine cloth. Rust eats away at metal. Thieves dig in and carry things off. Nothing there is truly safe. The other storeroom is in heaven, and nothing can touch it. No moth, no rust, no thief. Jesus is not scolding us for owning things. He is telling us the plain truth about where lasting treasure can actually be kept.
Context Moth, rust, and thieves
In Jesus’ day, wealth was not numbers on a screen. It was woven garments, stored grain, and coins of metal. Each one had a natural enemy. Moths ruined the cloth, damp air rusted the metal, and thieves broke through the walls to steal the rest.
The word for “break in” pictures digging straight through a wall. Most homes were built of mud-brick, so a thief could simply tunnel in. Every threat Jesus names was an ordinary danger His listeners already knew.

²¹ For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Here is the hinge of the whole passage. Jesus does not say your treasure follows your heart. He says the opposite. Your heart follows your thēsauros, pronounced thay-sow-ROSS. Strong's G2344, treasure, a storehouse of valuables. This word means both the treasure and the place that stores it. Everyone stores something. Jesus is asking where your storehouse is, because your heart will move in and live there. . Whatever you pour yourself into is where your heart quietly goes to live. So the real question is not only what you own. It is what owns you.
This is why the gospel is such good news here. The greatest treasure heaven holds is not gold streets or a reward we earned. It is Christ Himself, given to us freely. When He becomes the treasure we love most, our hearts follow Him home, and no moth or rust or thief can ever reach Him.
Study notes Aim your mind upward
Paul says the same thing Jesus is teaching, only in plainer words.
"Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things." Colossians 3:2 (BSB)
Notice it is something we do on purpose. We set our minds. We choose, day by day, where to fix our attention. And where the mind is set, the heart is not far behind.
Jesus is not asking us to despise good things or to feel guilty for having them. He is inviting us to something better. He is offering a treasure that cannot rot, cannot rust, and cannot be stolen, and He is asking us to let our hearts rest there.

Decision of the day: Do one concrete thing today that stores treasure in heaven. Give something away, forgive a debt, or spend unhurried time with God, and notice your heart begin to follow.
Pray to Close
The central truth: Store up treasure in heaven, because your heart will always follow whatever you treasure.
Praise: praise God that in Christ He gives you a treasure that can never rot, rust, or be stolen.
Confess: confess anything on earth you have been treasuring above Him.
Yield: ask God to help you set your mind on things above, and to let your heart follow Him there.
