Today’s Passage: Matthew 6:19-21
Jesus shifts His focus on the mountain from secret devotion to material possessions. He examines the assets people work so hard to accumulate. His command provides a direct principle for living: store up treasure in heaven, because your heart will always follow whatever you treasure. He asks you to examine the vault where you keep your ultimate security.

¹⁹ Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. ²⁰ But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.
Jesus sets two investments side by side. The earthly storeroom is fragile. Moths destroy textiles. Oxidation corrodes metal. Thieves breach walls and carry off valuables. Earth offers zero absolute security. The heavenly storeroom remains impenetrable. It stands completely secure from natural decay and human theft. Jesus speaks the plain truth about the physics of lasting wealth.
Context Moth, rust, and thieves
First-century wealth consisted of tangible goods: woven garments, stored grain, and precious metals. Each asset faced a natural enemy. Moths consumed fabric. Damp air oxidized coins. The Greek word for “break in” literally means to dig through. Since first-century houses featured mud-brick walls, a thief could tunnel directly into a home. Jesus cites the everyday vulnerabilities His audience already understood.

²¹ For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Jesus states a law of human nature. Your heart follows your thēsauros, pronounced thay-sow-ROSS. Strong's G2344, treasure, a storehouse of valuables. This term denotes the valuable item itself and the receptacle built to protect it. Every person builds a storehouse. Jesus identifies where you place your storehouse as the exact coordinate where your heart will relocate. . The object you invest your time, money, and energy into becomes the gravitational center of your affections. The deciding factor is what you permit to own you.
The gospel provides the ultimate solution. The supreme treasure of heaven is Christ Himself, given freely to you. When Christ becomes your primary treasure, your heart anchors itself to Him. That vault withstands every moth, rust, or thief.

Directing your mind requires a deliberate act of the will. You choose your focal point daily. Once you set your mind on heaven, your heart establishes its residence there.
Jesus offers you an impenetrable vault. He presents a treasure immune to decay and theft, and He invites your heart to rest securely in it. Choose a concrete action today to deposit treasure in heaven. Give an asset away, forgive a debt, or carve out unhurried time to study Scripture, and watch your heart begin to track upward toward Christ.

Approach God and acknowledge Christ as your supreme, indestructible treasure. Confess any earthly assets or securities you have elevated above Him. Ask God to train your mind to focus on eternal realities so your heart will firmly anchor itself in heaven.
