Today’s Passage: Matthew 6:13
Jesus finishes his model prayer with a stark reality check. He establishes the Father’s name, His kingdom, our daily bread, and our forgiveness. Now, he addresses the enemy. We end this prayer asking the Father to keep us from temptation and rescue us from evil, because the fight belongs entirely to Him.
Context Where the prayer lands
Look at the trajectory of the prayer. It begins in heaven with God’s sovereignty. It moves to earth with our physical needs and moral failures. It concludes on a battlefield. Jesus forces his disciples to recognize the threat. He trains them to identify the enemy and petition the Father for extraction.

¹³ And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’
Jesus anticipates the daily friction of living in a fallen world. He knows you face the concrete pull of sin. He equips you with a defensive strategy before the attack occurs.
Consider the first phrase. “Lead us not into temptation.” This is a deliberate request for preventative grace, asking the Father to steer you clear of the trap.
The second phrase shifts to active conflict. “ rhyomai, pronounced ROO-oh-my. Strong's G4506, to rescue, snatch from danger, deliver. This specific word means to rescue or snatch someone out of imminent danger. Picture a strong hand reaching into rushing rapids to haul a drowning man to the riverbank. You ask the Father for direct intervention, calling on Him to reach in and pull you out. us from the evil one.” This requires a superior force. You call for a stronger hand.
This single word shifts the entire burden of victory. You abandon the illusion of self-reliance. You concede the limits of your own strength and appeal to the only Authority equipped to handle the enemy.
Study notes The Father always leaves a door open
The Father answers this petition with a guarantee. He provides a secure exit for every test.
"No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide an escape, so that you can stand up under it." 1 Corinthians 10:13 (BSB)
The petition and the guarantee align perfectly. You ask the Father for rescue, and He provides the escape route. The door stands open. Your responsibility is to locate it and step through it.
Jesus places this petition at the very end of the prayer. He directs you to conclude your time with God by acknowledging your vulnerability and leaning your entire weight on the Father’s protection. The safest position in any conflict is behind His shield. Today, pinpoint one specific area where you face a strong pull toward compromise. Name that battleground to God, and ask Him plainly to steer you clear of the trap and execute your rescue.
Pray to Close
Talk to God about the specific areas where you rely on your own willpower instead of His protection. Ask the Father to keep you far from the edge of temptation today. Hand over the battles you try to win alone, and ask Him to pull you out of danger with His stronger hand.
