The First Word Is Father

Today’s Passage: Matthew 6:9

Jesus has just warned against praying to be seen by people. Now He shows a better way. He hands His friends a short prayer to pray, and it is only a few lines long. Over the next five days we will walk through it slowly, one line at a time. Today we begin at the very first words.

As you read, hold this: We pray to a holy Father in heaven whose name we long to see honored.

⁹ So then, this is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.

Jesus does not open with a long speech or a list of needs. He opens with one word that changes everything. Before we ask God for a single thing, He teaches us who we are speaking to.

The first word is Father. Not a stranger. Not a distant king we have never met. A Father. We come to God the way a child runs to a parent who loves them. That one word sets the tone for the whole prayer.

Then Jesus adds two more words: in heaven. This Father is not small. He is higher and greater than we can picture. So both things are true at once. He is close enough to call Father, and great enough to trust with everything.

That is a gentle, steadying place to begin. We are not shouting into an empty sky. We are speaking to Someone who loves us and rules over all.

Next comes the very first request, and it is a surprising one. It is not about us at all.

The first thing we pray for

hallowed be Your name.

Before we mention our own needs, Jesus teaches us to pray about God’s name. The word hallowed (ἁγιάζω) hagiazō, pronounced hah-ghee-AD-zoh. Strong's G37, to make holy, set apart as sacred. This word means to set apart as holy, to treat as sacred and precious. When we pray it, we ask that God’s name get the honor it deserves. First in our own hearts, then out through our words and days into the whole world. means treated as holy. It means lifted high, honored, held precious. So the first thing we long for is that God’s name would be loved and honored everywhere.

Notice the order Jesus chose. His name comes first, before our bread, before our troubles. He is not pushing our needs aside. He is putting them in their right place. When we start by honoring God, everything else finds its true size.

To honor God’s name is not only something we say. It is something we live. When we love Him, obey Him, and speak of Him with care, His name is treated as holy through us. Our small, ordinary days can make His great name shine.

So the prayer starts where all real prayer starts. We look up and see a good and holy Father. We long, before anything else, to see His name honored. From that place, we are ready to bring Him everything else. We will begin doing exactly that tomorrow.

Personal Application

1. When you pray, do you begin by remembering who God is, or do you rush straight to your list of needs?

2. What would change in you if you truly saw God as both a loving Father and a holy King?

Decision of the day: Before you ask God for anything today, stop and honor His name first. Say back to Him one true thing that makes His name worth loving.

Pray to Close

The central truth: We pray to a holy Father in heaven, and we long, before anything else, to see His name honored.

Praise: praise God as a Father who is near, and a King who is holy and great.

Yield: ask that His name would be honored through your words and choices today, not only your own name.

Ask: ask the Holy Spirit to help you pray from the heart of a loved child, not from fear.
