Today’s Passage: Matthew 6:9
Jesus has instructed His disciples to avoid praying for an audience. He provides a clear alternative: a concise model prayer spanning only a few sentences. Over the next five days, we will examine this text line by line. You pray to a holy Father in heaven, and your first priority is to see His name honored.

⁹ So then, this is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.
Jesus establishes the relationship before the requests. He opens with a single word that alters the entire foundation of prayer: Father. You approach God with the confidence of a child running to a loving parent. This single title establishes the tone for the entire model.
Context An intimate address
In the first century, people addressed God with strict formality. Addressing the Creator directly as Father demonstrated a bold, personal intimacy. Jesus invited His followers into the exact nearness a beloved child experiences at home.
Jesus immediately adds a locational truth: in heaven. This Father possesses infinite authority. Both realities exist simultaneously. You have a Father close enough to hear you and a Sovereign great enough to trust with your life. You speak to a Person who governs the universe. The first petition follows immediately, focusing entirely on His character.
The primary request
hallowed be Your name.
Jesus prioritizes God’s reputation above human needs. The word hagiazō, pronounced hah-ghee-AD-zoh. Strong's G37, to make holy, set apart as sacred. This Greek term means to set apart as sacred. Praying this word constitutes a request for God’s reputation to receive the exact honor it warrants. You ask for this reverence to begin in your own mind and extend through your actions into the public square. means treated as holy, lifted high, and held precious. Your primary request is for God’s name to receive absolute honor across the earth.
Observe the sequence. God’s name takes precedence over your daily bread and your personal crises. This arrangement places your human needs in proper perspective. Honoring God reduces your anxieties to their true size. Hallowing His name requires concrete action. You treat His name as holy by obeying His commands and speaking of Him with exact care. Your daily conduct serves as the primary evidence of His greatness.

God Himself provides the capacity for this intimacy through His Spirit.

Your adoption is a legal and spiritual reality. His Spirit prompts your mind to recognize Him as Father, eliminating the need for fear.
True prayer begins with facts. You address a good and holy Father, and you prioritize His honor above your own requests. Before you ask God to solve a single problem today, pause and verbally honor His name. State one concrete attribute that makes Him worthy of your trust. From that established foundation, you are ready to bring Him everything else.

Approach God with praise for His dual nature as a loving Father and a sovereign King. Ask Him to use your words and decisions today to bring visible honor to His name. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you the confidence of an adopted child, replacing any lingering fear with absolute trust in His goodness.
