Today’s Passage: Matthew 6:1-4
Jesus keeps teaching on the mountain. Now He turns to the good things we do, like giving to people in need. He asks a simple question with His words: who are you doing it for? The answer changes everything.
As you read, hold this: Give quietly, for an audience of One, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Matthew 6:1 (BSB)
¹ “Be careful not to perform your righteous acts before men to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
Jesus is not saying to hide every good deed. He is asking about the reason behind it. Are you doing it so people will watch? If applause is what you want, applause is all you get. There is nothing left for the Father to give.
Matthew 6:2 (BSB)
² So when you give to the needy, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. Truly I tell you, they already have their full reward.
Context Actors on a stage
The word Jesus uses for “hypocrites” was the ordinary word for a stage actor. An actor puts on a mask and plays to a crowd. Jesus says some people give the same way. The kindness is a performance, and the crowd is the whole point.
Picture someone blowing a trumpet so everyone turns to look before he gives. Jesus says these eleēmosynē, pronounced el-eh-ay-mos-OO-nay. Strong's G1654, an act of mercy, charitable giving to the needy. This word means real mercy, real help, handed to someone who is hurting. It is not a show. Mercy from an open hand does not need a crowd to be real. have their reward already. People saw them. People were impressed. That was the goal, and they got it. The account is closed.
Matthew 6:3-4 (BSB)
³ But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, ⁴ so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
“Do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing” is a picture, not a rule. Give so quietly that you almost forget it yourself. Do not keep a list. Do not wait for thanks. Let the gift slip out and be gone.
Study notes Nothing is lost with God
The quiet gift can feel wasted. No one saw. No one said thank you. Jesus says Someone did see. And what the Father sees, He never forgets.
"For God is not unjust. He will not forget your work and the love you have shown for His name as you have ministered to the saints and continue to do so." Hebrews 6:10 (BSB)
Your good is safe with Him. He keeps it when no one else even noticed.
And here is the promise. Your Father sees what is done in secret. He is the one set of eyes that matters. When you give for Him alone, you are not left empty. He rewards you Himself. That reward is far better than any clapping crowd.
So there are really two ways to give. One plays to people and gets a quick, thin cheer. The other plays to the Father and gets Him. He is the audience of One, and He is enough.

What good thing could you do this week that no one but God would ever know about?
Decision of the day: Do one act of kindness today in secret. Give, help, or serve where no one will thank you, and tell no one afterward.
Pray to Close
The central truth: Give quietly, for an audience of One, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Confess: confess any good you have done mainly to be seen and praised.
Ask: ask God to make you glad to serve when only He is watching.
Yield: yield your need for thanks, and trust the Father who never forgets.
