Today’s Passage: Matthew 5:27-30
Jesus continues teaching on the mountain. He examines a command everyone in the crowd knew by heart. He bypasses outward behavior and traces the law back to the origin of the offense. Purity begins in the human heart, and it is worth guarding at any cost.

²⁷ You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’
Every listener recognized this law. God carved it into the stone tablets at Mount Sinai as one of the Ten Commandments. Most people felt safe measuring their obedience by their physical actions. They considered themselves innocent based on their physical restraint. Jesus shatters that false security.
Context The Original Intent of the Law
The command against adultery stood as a pillar of ancient Israelite society. First-century religious teachers evaluated obedience strictly by outward compliance. Jesus upholds the command. He demonstrates the original target of the law: the internal condition of the individual.

²⁸ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Jesus moves the boundary line. A violation occurs the moment a look feeds a epithymeō, pronounced eh-pee-thoo-MEH-oh. Strong's G1937, to desire strongly, to lust after, to set one's desire on. This term describes fixing your desire on an object and holding it tightly. It specifies the deliberate second look you maintain and feed. Desire takes the steering wheel of the mind at that exact moment. You surrender your purity the second you entertain the craving. . The mind can shatter a commandment while the body remains entirely passive. God examines the hidden motives of the intellect, and He holds you accountable for what transpires there.

²⁹ If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. ³⁰ And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to depart into hell.
These statements carry deliberate shock value. The physical eye and hand remain neutral instruments. Blinding a physical eye leaves the internal corruption intact. Jesus employs extreme imagery to establish a verdict: you must take sin seriously. You must sever whatever pulls you toward moral compromise.

You maintain purity by sprinting away from temptation and running toward righteousness.

You flee the compromise, and you pursue the standard. God designed you to undertake this pursuit alongside other believers who share the same objective.
Jesus demands uncompromising internal integrity. Identify one specific habit, screen, or routine that steers your thoughts in the wrong direction. Take a concrete step today to cut off its access to your life, and ask God to replace that vulnerability with a clean heart.

Bring your hidden desires to God and confess the secret compromises you maintain. Ask Him to forge a clean heart within you and provide the strength to make hard cuts. Surrender the specific habit or access point you have been protecting, and trust Him to guard your mind in its place.
