Today’s Passage: Matthew 5:13-16
Jesus has just finished the Beatitudes. Now He turns to the ordinary people sitting on the hillside and tells them who they already are. He does not hand them a list of things to become. He gives them two plain pictures from daily life, salt and light, and both of them share one thing. They are made to be used, not hidden away.
As you read, hold this: You are salt and light, meant to be tasted and seen, so the world glorifies your Father.

¹³ You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its savor, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.
Salt does its work by being tasted. It flavors food and keeps it from spoiling. But salt that has lost its taste is good for nothing. Jesus says His people are like salt. We are meant to make a real difference right where we are. Salt shut up in a jar helps no one.
Context Why salt mattered so much
In Jesus’ day salt was precious. There were no fridges, so salt was how people kept meat and fish from spoiling. It also turned plain food into something good. A small pinch changed a whole meal. That is the picture Jesus paints. A little bit, worked in quietly, can change everything around it.

¹⁴ You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. ¹⁵ Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they set it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
Now the second picture. A town built on a hill glows at night, and no one can hide it. You can see it for miles. And no one lights a lamp only to cover it with a bowl. That would be silly. You set the lamp up high so it fills the whole room. Light exists to be seen. So do you.

¹⁶ In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Here is the point of both pictures. Let your phōs, pronounced FOHSS. Strong's G5457, light, brightness. This word simply means light, like a lamp or the sun. John later uses it for Jesus, the true Light of the world. So the light you shine isn’t really yours. It’s His light, and you’re just carrying it. shine. But look carefully at why. It is not so people will admire you. It is so they will praise your Father in heaven. Your good deeds are meant to point past you, straight to God. The light was never yours to keep. It came from Him, and it leads people back to Him.
Study notes Shining in a dark world
Paul says the very same thing to a young church, only without the pictures. The people of God are meant to stand out, and to shine, right in the middle of a world that has lost its way.
"so that you may be blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and perverse generation, in which you shine as lights in the world" Philippians 2:15 (BSB)
Notice where the light shines. Not off by itself, safe and hidden, but out in the crooked world, where it is needed most. That is exactly where Jesus sends His salt and His light.
Jesus is not asking you to be loud or showy. Salt works quietly. A lamp simply burns. You do not have to force your light. You only have to stop hiding it. Live the good that God has put in you, out in the open, and let people trace it home to Him.

When people see the good you do, do they end up thinking well of you, or thanking God?
Decision of the day: Do one good, visible thing for someone today, and if they thank you, gently point them to God as the reason.

The central truth: You are salt and light, meant to be tasted and seen, so the world glorifies your Father.
Praise: praise God, who is the true Light and the source of every good thing in you.
Confess: confess any place you have kept your light hidden, out of fear or comfort.
Yield: ask God to let your good deeds point people to Him and not to you.
