Today’s Passage
Jesus sits on a mountain before a large crowd. He names the people God calls blessed, singling out a specific group for a surprising title. Peacemakers receive the name of God’s children, because making peace is exactly the work their Father does.
Context The meaning of sons
In the first century, a son carried his father’s name and learned his father’s trade. A son mirrored his father’s character. Calling a person a son of God means that person acts like God. This phrase requires action. It points directly to a person who works the way the Creator works.

⁹ Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
Examine the specific word Jesus selects. He identifies the eirēnopoios, pronounced ay-ray-no-poy-OSS. Strong's G1518, peacemaker, one who makes peace. The original Greek term combines two specific concepts: peace, and the action of making. A peacemaker takes raw materials and constructs peace, the way a carpenter builds a table out of rough wood. This exact word appears only one time in the entire New Testament, right here in Christ’s teaching. . People who love peace enjoy a quiet room. People who keep peace stay quiet to avoid trouble. A peacemaker takes a different path. A peacemaker walks directly into the conflict and builds a bridge.
Making peace requires friction. You must initiate the conversation. You must speak the difficult, honest truth, or offer a kind word when silence feels easier. The process demands a cost upfront to secure healing later. Look at the historical record of God’s action. Humanity stood in rebellion against Him. God initiated the rescue. He stepped into the hostility and established peace with us at the cost of His own Son. When you step into conflict to build peace, you engage in the family business.
Study notes The harvest of peace
James uses a concrete agricultural fact to explain this process. He describes peace as a seed you plant in the soil.
"Peacemakers who sow in peace reap the fruit of righteousness." James 3:18 (BSB)
You plant peace in rocky soil. You cultivate it through hard work, and a harvest of righteousness grows from that effort.
Jesus guarantees a specific verdict for peacemakers. They receive the title of God’s children. You engage in peacemaking because you already belong to the family. Children naturally mature to resemble their Father. Evaluate your own relationships today. Identify one person where the tension runs high. Initiate contact with that individual. Speak a kind or honest word, and take one concrete step to build peace in that space.

Thank God for initiating the rescue and establishing peace with humanity at the cost of His Son. Acknowledge the times you have chosen personal comfort over the hard work of reconciliation. Ask your Father for the courage to walk toward a difficult conflict today and build peace in His name.
