Today’s Passage: Matthew 5:9
Jesus is on a mountain. A large crowd has climbed up to hear Him. One by one, He is naming the people God calls blessed. Today He blesses a certain kind of person, and He gives them a surprising name.
As you read, hold this: Peacemakers are called children of God, because making peace is what their Father does.
Context What "sons of God" meant
In that world, a son carried his father’s name and learned his father’s trade. To call someone a son of God was to say he acts like God. So this line is not about a calm feeling inside you. It is about looking like your Father in what you actually do.

⁹ Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
Look closely at the word Jesus chose. Not peace-lovers. Not peace-keepers. Peace-makers. A peace-lover enjoys the quiet. A peace-keeper stays quiet to avoid trouble. A eirēnopoios, pronounced ay-ray-no-poy-OSS. Strong's G1518, peacemaker, one who makes peace. This word joins two small words: peace, and to make. A peacemaker does not just wish for peace. He makes it, the way hands make a real thing out of raw wood. This word shows up only once in the whole New Testament, right here. walks toward the trouble and builds something new in it.
This is the surprise in the verse. Making peace almost never feels peaceful. It means going first. It means saying the hard, honest thing, or the kind thing you would rather swallow. It costs you something before it heals anything.
And that is exactly what God did. We were far from Him and against Him. He did not wait for us to come around. He came near and made peace with us, and it cost Him His own Son. So when you make peace, you are not doing something strange. You are doing the family work.
Study notes Peace is a seed
James later picks up the very same picture. He talks about peace as something you plant in the ground and wait on.
"Peacemakers who sow in peace reap the fruit of righteousness." James 3:18 (BSB)
Peace is a seed. You sow it in a hard place, quietly, and good things grow there that could grow no other way.
Notice what Jesus does not say. He does not say peacemakers earn their way into God’s family. He says they will be called children of God. You do not make peace to become His child. You make peace because you already are one, and children grow up to look like their Father.

The central truth: Peacemakers are called children of God, because making peace is what their Father does.
Praise: praise God, who did not wait for us but came near and made peace with us Himself.
Confess: confess where you have kept the quiet by hiding, or loved comfort more than people.
Ask: ask God for the courage to walk toward one hard place today and make peace there.
