Today’s Passage: Matthew 5:8
The blessings keep coming, one after another, each one turning the world’s rules upside down. He has blessed the poor, the sad, the gentle, the hungry, the merciful. Now He says something that sounds almost too good to be true. He says a certain kind of person gets to see God.
As you read, hold this: A heart made single toward God is the heart that gets to see Him.
Context The sixth blessing
This is the sixth of the eight blessings that open the Sermon on the Mount. The people of Israel longed to see God, yet they also knew He was holy. Even Moses was told no one could see God’s face and live. So this promise would have made the crowd lean in. Who could ever be allowed to see God?

⁸ Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Jesus does not say the smart in heart, or the strong in heart, or the busy in heart. He says the katharos, pronounced kah-thah-ROSS. Strong's G2513, pure, clean, unmixed. This word means clean, with nothing else mixed in. Farmers used it for grain with no chaff left. A pure heart is not a perfect heart. It just wants God, with nothing else hiding underneath. . He is not talking about people who never do wrong. He is talking about people whose hearts are aimed at one thing.
So a pure heart is a single heart. It is a heart that is not split in two. Most of us know what a split heart feels like. We say we want God, but part of us is holding on to something else and hoping God will not notice. A pure heart lets that go. It stops pretending. It brings the whole self to God, and holds nothing back in the dark.
That is why this blessing is such good news. The King is not asking us to be flawless. He is asking us to be honest, to stop dividing our hearts, and to let Him have all of us. When we do, He begins the cleaning work Himself.
What it means to see God
The reward is the biggest one of all. The pure in heart will see God. In part, that starts now. When your heart is single toward Him, you begin to notice Him everywhere, in His Word, in His kindness, in the quiet. The divided heart keeps missing Him. The single heart keeps finding Him.
And one day it will be no longer partial. Those who belong to Jesus will see God face to face, the very thing Moses was not allowed. That is the hope every clean heart is walking toward.
Study notes An old song asked the same question
Long before this sermon, a psalm asked who could climb God’s holy hill and stand in His presence. The answer sounds a lot like the one Jesus gives.
"Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? Who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear deceitfully." Psalm 24:3-4 (BSB)
Clean hands are about what we do. A pure heart is about what we love. God has always wanted both, and in Jesus He gives us the clean heart we could never make on our own.
We cannot scrub our own hearts clean. But we do not have to. We bring God the whole divided mess, and He is the one who makes it single again. Our part is to stop hiding and hand Him everything.

Decision of the day: Name the one thing you have been keeping in a locked room away from God. Today, open that door in prayer and hand it to Him out loud.
Pray to Close
The central truth: A heart made single toward God is the heart that gets to see Him.
Confess: tell God honestly where your heart has been divided.
Ask: ask Him to make your heart single and clean, since you cannot do it yourself.
Yield: give Him the whole of you today, even the part you would rather keep hidden.
