Today’s Passage: Romans 8:14–17, 26–27
Paul wrote Romans 8 to lay out the concrete facts of life in the Spirit. He builds a solid case. First, he establishes the reality of the family God builds out of us. Then he presents a profound truth for your moments of absolute weakness. When you have no words, the Spirit still prays for you.
Context The legal reality of Roman adoption
Consider the legal context of Roman adoption. A Roman family could legally take in an outsider, often a grown adult, and make him a son. From that legal transaction forward, he possessed the full inheritance rights of a biological heir. He took the family name. He became a true, permanent son.
Romans 8:14 (BSB)
¹⁴ For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
This verse identifies a legal family. Wherever the Spirit of God leads, there stands a son of God. Paul uses the word sons because Roman law gave the inheritance to the son. Two verses later, he uses the word children. The inheritance belongs equally to daughters and sons.
Romans 8:15 (BSB)
¹⁵ For you did not receive a spirit of slavery that returns you to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption to sonship, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
Paul contrasts a spirit of slavery with the Spirit of adoption. Slavery returns a person to fear. Adoption brings you into the family. Look at the specific verb Paul chooses. You cry out the name of God. Abba is an Aramaic term. It was the common, intimate word a child used for a father in the homes where Jesus lived. Paul wrote this letter in Greek, yet he left this Aramaic family word on the page. Jesus prayed this exact word in the garden of Gethsemane (Mark 14:36). God gives you a family word to speak back to Him, and the Holy Spirit puts that word on your lips.
Romans 8:16–17 (BSB)
¹⁶ The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.
¹⁷ And if we are children, then we are heirs: heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ—if indeed we suffer with Him, so that we may also be glorified with Him.
Two distinct witnesses testify to your adoption. Your own spirit affirms that you belong, and the Holy Spirit stands alongside to give the exact same testimony. The Spirit guarantees your inheritance, and Paul specifies the exact recipients. It belongs to children. Paul also states the facts about the road ahead. You will share in the suffering of Christ, and you will share in His glory.
Romans 8:26–27 (BSB)
²⁶ In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know how we ought to pray, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans too deep for words.
²⁷ And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
Examine the second sentence. Paul includes himself in this reality. He states that we do not know how to pray. He places himself entirely in that group. Right there in your absolute inability to find the words, the Spirit hyperentynchanei, pronounced hoo-per-en-toong-KHAN-eye. Strong's G5241, to intercede on behalf of, to plead someone's case. This specific Greek term means to step in and speak on behalf of someone who cannot speak for himself. The Spirit steps into your silence. He prays for you with groans, carrying your unfinished prayers directly to God. .
Verse 27 identifies the listener. God searches the heart. The Father reads the reality inside a person, and the Spirit speaks from that exact location. The prayer has zero distance to travel. The Spirit prays according to the will of God. You can possess absolute confidence that the Spirit asks for the exact right thing.
Study notes The evidence of the Son's prayer
Paul presents this same truth again a few verses later regarding Jesus.
"Who is there to condemn us? For Christ Jesus, who died, and more than that was raised to life, is at the right hand of God—and He is interceding for us." Romans 8:34 (BSB)
The Spirit prays within you, and the Son prays for you at the right hand of the Father. God Himself holds your position in this family secure through prayer.
You will face moments when you approach God with zero words of your own. He answers your silence with a Person who prays on your behalf. Base your actions on this truth today. Pray one time using the very first plain words that come to your mind. Refuse the urge to edit yourself or make your sentences sound impressive. Speak the plain truth, and let the Spirit carry the rest to the Father.

Talk to God about the reality of your adoption into His family. Thank Him for initiating your salvation and for providing the Holy Spirit to pray when you lack the words. Bring Him one burden exactly as it sits in your mind right now, without trying to tidy up your sentences first. Ask the Spirit to carry the things you cannot articulate directly to the Father.
