Sealed

Today’s Passage: Ephesians 1:13–14

Paul is writing to a church in the city of Ephesus, and he has just spent twelve verses listing what God has done for His people. Today we come to the end of that long list, and there at the end stands the Holy Spirit. It is only two verses, so we can afford to walk slowly through them.

As you read, hold this: You are not on probation. God has already put His own mark on you.

Context What a seal was

A seal in Paul’s world was nothing like a sticker. You softened a lump of wax, pressed it onto a letter or a jar or a door, and then stamped the wax with the ring you wore on your finger, so that the ring left your own design behind in it.

Anyone who walked past that seal learned two things at once: who owned this, and that nobody had opened it, for breaking another person’s seal was a crime.

A seal, then, was never decoration. It was an owner saying, out loud and in wax, this is mine.

¹³ And in Him, having heard and believed the word of truth—the gospel of your salvation—you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,

Watch the order Paul sets down in that verse: heard, then believed, then sealed. There is no waiting room in between the three, and no trial period tacked on at the end.

Now notice who did the sealing. Paul does not say that you sealed yourself; he says you were sealed. Somebody else pressed the ring down, and it was not you.

Then notice what the seal is made of. It is not a feeling, and not a certificate on a wall. God marked His people with a Person, the promised Holy Spirit. Earlier in this series we heard God promise to put His Spirit inside His people, and this verse is that very promise kept, so that the mark on you is God Himself.

¹⁴ who is the pledge of our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession, to the praise of His glory.

Paul does not say that we might come into an inheritance someday; he says the Spirit is the first payment (ἀρραβών) arrabōn, pronounced ar-rah-BONE. Strong's G728, a down payment, pledge, first installment guaranteeing the rest. This was money language: the first part of a price, paid early to make the deal certain. Once that first payment was made, the rest was guaranteed to come. God did not just promise the Spirit; He sent the Spirit Himself as that first payment. on the inheritance that is already ours. Verse 14 tells us the Spirit stays until the day of redemption comes, and He does not leave before it, because a first payment is never taken back.

Then look at the last line, where all of this happens to the praise of His glory. Your safety, in the end, is not about you at all; it is about Him, and that is the very reason it holds. If keeping you depended on you, you would be right to be nervous, but it does not depend on you. It depends on Him.

Years earlier, Jesus had said this same thing in plainer words.

"I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them out of My hand." John 10:28 (BSB)

Jesus says that nobody can snatch them: not anyone else, and not you either, because you are not the one holding on. He is.

None of this is permission to live carelessly, for a sealed letter still has to be carried to where it is going. You can obey God today because you are already His, and not in order to become His.

Personal Application

Where do you still try to earn something God says He has already given?
What would you do today if you were certain God will not let go of you?

Today’s decision: I will name one thing I have been doing to earn God’s approval. Today I will do that same thing as a thank-you instead.

Pray to Close

The central truth: You are not on probation. God has already put His own mark on you.

Give thanks: thank God that He did the sealing Himself, instead of asking you to hold on tightly enough.

Confess: tell God plainly where you have been living as though His love still had to be earned.

Ask: ask the Holy Spirit to make you sure of what He is, so that you can rest in it today.
