Today’s Passage: John 14:15–27
It is the last night before Jesus dies. He sits at the table with His closest friends and tells them He is going away. Their hearts fill with fear. Jesus meets their anxiety with a concrete fact. You are not left alone. The Spirit is Jesus staying with you.

These men left their homes to follow Him. Now He tells them they cannot come where He is going. Fear fills the room. Everything Jesus says next answers that fear directly.
John 14:15–17 (BSB)
¹⁵ If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. ¹⁶ And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you forever— ¹⁷ the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you do know Him, for He abides with you and will be in you.
Jesus starts with love and makes a definitive promise. The Father will give them Someone. An Advocate comes and stands with you when you cannot stand on your own. Look closely at the exact wording. Jesus promises another Advocate.
Word study "Another Advocate": *allos paraklētos* (John 14:16)
Greek: ἄλλος παράκλητος (allos paraklētos), pronounced AL-loss par-AK-lay-toss. Strong’s G243 and G3875.
The Greek word allos means another of the exact same kind. It guarantees a replacement of equal value. Everything the disciples had while Jesus stood beside them in the flesh, they will continue to have.
He promises to send a Person they already know. Jesus says, “You do know Him.” You use those words to describe a distinct individual. Jesus speaks of a living presence.

¹⁸ I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
Jesus names the exact fear in the room. Then He issues the promise. He will come to them Himself. He anchors their courage in His own ongoing presence.

²³ Jesus replied, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word. My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.
Jesus uses the word We. The Father and the Son together make a home with the individual who loves Him. God Himself moves in.
John 14:26 (BSB)
²⁶ But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have told you.
Jesus plainly identifies this Advocate as the Holy Spirit. The Spirit teaches. He reminds. He keeps the words of Jesus alive in the disciples. He guards the exact truth Jesus already delivered.
John 14:27 (BSB)
²⁷ Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid.
The promise concludes with peace on the worst night of their lives. Jesus specifies this as My peace. The world attempts to manufacture peace by removing trouble. Jesus secures peace by providing a Person who stays with you through the trouble.
Study notes The same Person, years later
Years later, Paul writes to ordinary Christians in Rome. He describes this reality as a present possession.
"You, however, are controlled not by the flesh, but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ." Romans 8:9 (BSB)
Paul refers to Him as the Spirit of God and the Spirit of Christ in a single breath. This confirms the meaning of another. The Spirit shares the exact nature of Jesus because He is the Spirit of Jesus.
The disciples feared abandonment. Jesus answered their fear with a Person who stays. He met their anxiety by giving His own Spirit to abide in them permanently. The evidence of His love is His constant presence. The next time you feel alone today, state the facts out loud. Say, “I am not left alone.” Then tackle the very next task in front of you.
Pray to Close
Thank God that He answered human fear with a living Person. Ask Him to build absolute certainty in your mind today that you are never on your own. Confess any specific areas of your life where you operate as if nobody stands beside you. Acknowledge His Spirit as your constant Advocate.

Jesus told frightened friends that He would remain with them. This song looks back over a whole life and recognizes God standing there the entire time. Sing it as praise to the One who never lets go.
