Today’s Passage: John 14:15–27
It is the last night before Jesus dies, and He is at the table with His closest friends. He has just told them that He is going away, and their hearts are full of fear.
As you read, hold this: You are not left alone. The Spirit is Jesus staying with you.
Context The night He said goodbye
These men had left their homes to follow Him, and now He tells them that where He is going they cannot come. That is the fear sitting in the room, and everything He says next is His answer to it.
John 14:15–17 (BSB)
¹⁵ If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. ¹⁶ And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you forever— ¹⁷ the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you do know Him, for He abides with you and will be in you.
Jesus starts with love, not with rules, and then He makes a promise: the Father will give them Someone. An Advocate is one who comes and stands with you when you cannot stand alone.
Look closely at the small word in front of it. He does not say an Advocate, He says another Advocate.
Word study "Another Advocate": *allos paraklētos* (John 14:16)
Greek: ἄλλος παράκλητος (allos paraklētos), pronounced AL-loss par-AK-lay-toss. Strong’s G243 and G3875.
Allos means another of the very same kind, not a lesser stand-in and not a consolation prize. All that they had while Jesus stood beside them, they would go on having still.
He is not sending a force or a feeling, but Someone they already know. “You do know Him,” Jesus says, and that is how you speak of a person, never of a thing.

¹⁸ I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
That is the fear in the room, said out loud, and then comes the promise: He will not leave them, He will come to them Himself.
Notice that He does not say, “Be brave.” He says, “I will not leave you.”

²³ Jesus replied, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word. My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.
We, He says. The Father and the Son together, making a home with the one who loves Him. This is no message sent from far away, but God Himself moving in.

²⁶ But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have told you.
Here Jesus names Him plainly: the Holy Spirit. He teaches, and He reminds, keeping Jesus’ words alive in them after Jesus has gone. He does not arrive with a new book of His own, but guards and stirs up the words they already have.
John 14:27 (BSB)
²⁷ Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid.
That is how the promise ends, with peace on the worst night of their lives, and not just any peace but My peace. The world tries to give peace by taking the trouble away, while Jesus gives peace by giving them a Person who stays.
Study notes The same Person, years later
Years later Paul wrote to ordinary Christians in Rome about this as something they already had.
"You, however, are controlled not by the flesh, but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ." Romans 8:9 (BSB)
In a single breath Paul calls Him the Spirit of God and then the Spirit of Christ. That is what another meant all along: He is like Jesus because He is the Spirit of Jesus.
They were afraid they would be left alone, and He answered their fear with a Person who stays. We can praise God that He met a room full of fear this way, giving not advice from a distance but His own Spirit to abide.

Today’s decision: The next time I notice I feel alone today, I will say out loud, “I am not left alone,” and then do the next thing.
Pray to Close
The central truth: You are not left alone. The Spirit is Jesus staying with you.
Give thanks: thank God that He answered a room full of fear with a Person, not with advice.
Ask: ask Him to make you certain today that you are not on your own.
Confess: tell Him the place where you have been living as if nobody were there.
