Today’s Passage: Ezekiel 36:24–28
Yesterday the Spirit of God hovered over dark water, and today He comes closer still. Ezekiel is speaking to people who have lost everything, and God answers them with a promise, saying “I will” again and again.
As you read, hold this: God promised a new heart. That is the same gospel, not a second one.
Context A people with nothing left
Ezekiel wrote to people who had been forced to live far from home, for Babylon’s army had marched them out. Their land was gone and their temple had been burned, and they had every reason to think God was finished with them. That is exactly who this promise was given to.

²⁴ For I will take you from among the nations and gather you out of all the countries, and I will bring you back into your own land.
God starts with the very thing they had lost, promising to bring them home again.
Notice who is doing the work. They do not find their own way back; He takes, He gathers, and He brings.

²⁵ I will also sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. I will cleanse you from all your impurities and all your idols.
Getting home was not enough, for they needed washing too.
Once again God is the one holding the water; He does not hand them a bucket and tell them to start scrubbing.

²⁶ I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.
This is the center of the whole passage. A heart of stone is hard; it cannot bend and it cannot love. A heart of flesh is warm and alive, and it can want God.
Read God’s words again slowly. He does not say, “Soften your heart.” He says He will take the stone out Himself, for nobody can operate on their own heart. This is work that only God can do.

²⁷ And I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes and to carefully observe My ordinances.
Yesterday the Spirit hovered over the water; here He comes qereb, pronounced KEH-rev. Strong's H7130, midst, inward part, the innermost part of a thing. This word means the deepest, innermost part of something. God is not promising to stand nearby. He is promising to move into your deepest place and live there. a people.
Look at the order of that verse. God puts His Spirit in first, and the changed walking comes after. Nobody cleans himself up in order to earn the Spirit; He comes in, and a new way of living follows Him.
This is not a second gospel for people who already believed. It is the one gospel, promised early, in which God does the changing and starts in the deepest part.

²⁸ Then you will live in the land that I gave your forefathers; you will be My people, and I will be your God.
That last line is what everything else was for. A land is good and a clean record is good, but the goal all along was belonging: “You will be My people, and I will be your God.”
Study notes Another prophet, the same promise
Jeremiah was speaking to the same generation, and God told him something almost identical.
"But this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD. I will put My law in their minds and inscribe it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they will be My people." Jeremiah 31:33 (BSB)
Two prophets, one promise, and both of them end the same way: My people, your God.
God promised a new heart. That is the same gospel, not a second one.

The central truth: God promised a new heart. That is the same gospel, not a second one.
Give thanks: thank Him that He promised a new heart before anyone thought to ask for one.
Ask: ask God to do the work in you that you have never managed to do yourself.
Hand over: hand Him the hardest part of your heart and tell Him it is His.
