Today’s Passage: Ezekiel 36:24–28
Yesterday you saw the Spirit of God hover over dark water. Today He moves closer. Ezekiel speaks to exiles who have lost their homes, their temple, and their hope. God answers their despair with a concrete promise, repeating the phrase “I will” again and again. God promised a new heart. That is the exact same gospel you rely on today.
Context A people with nothing left
The Babylonian army marched the Israelites out of their homeland. Ezekiel writes to these displaced people. Their land is gone. Their temple is burned. They have every reason to conclude God is finished with them. God chooses exactly this moment to deliver a promise of rescue.

²⁴ For I will take you from among the nations and gather you out of all the countries, and I will bring you back into your own land.
God starts with the physical reality of their loss. He promises to bring them home. Look at the active agent in this verse. The exiles do not secure their own freedom. God takes them, God gathers them, and God brings them back.

²⁵ I will also sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. I will cleanse you from all your impurities and all your idols.
Physical relocation is insufficient. They need spiritual washing. God holds the water. He performs the cleansing. He steps in to wash away their impurities and the stain of their idols.

²⁶ I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.
Here is the core of the verdict. A heart of stone is rigid. It cannot bend, and it cannot love. A heart of flesh pulses with life and responds to God. Read the text carefully. God commands no one to soften their own heart. He performs the transplant Himself. Human beings cannot operate on their own spiritual hearts. God alone does this work.

²⁷ And I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes and to carefully observe My ordinances.
Yesterday the Spirit hovered over the water. Today He comes qereb, pronounced KEH-rev. Strong's H7130, midst, inward part, the innermost part of a thing. This word indicates the deepest, innermost part of a person. God promises to move into your center and reside there. He establishes His permanent presence in your core. a people.
Observe the sequence of events. God inserts His Spirit first. The obedience follows. God enters, and a new pattern of living results from His presence. Human beings lack the power to clean themselves up to qualify for the Spirit. God initiates the change in the deepest part of you.

²⁸ Then you will live in the land that I gave your forefathers; you will be My people, and I will be your God.
This final line reveals the purpose of the entire process. A secure homeland has value. A clean record has value. The ultimate goal is a restored relationship: “You will be My people, and I will be your God.”
Study notes Another prophet, the same promise
Jeremiah spoke to the same generation of exiles, and God gave him a matching promise.
"But this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD. I will put My law in their minds and inscribe it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they will be My people." Jeremiah 31:33 (BSB)
We have two prophets recording one unified promise. Both declarations end with the exact same relational verdict: you will be My people, and I will be your God.
God promised a new heart, and He delivers it through the work of His Spirit. You cannot manufacture this change through human effort. Identify one specific area of your life you are currently trying to fix by willpower alone. Speak that struggle out loud today, and hand it entirely to God, trusting Him to do the inner work you lack the power to accomplish.
Pray to Close
Thank God for promising a new heart long before you ever knew you needed one. Ask Him to complete the work in you that you lack the strength to achieve on your own. Hand Him the most stubborn, unyielding part of your heart and acknowledge that it belongs entirely to Him.
