Today’s Passage: Genesis 1:1–2
Today we begin nine days on the Holy Spirit, and we start on the very first page of the Bible. Genesis opens on a world with no shape, no light, and nothing living in it, and right there, before anything has been made, the Spirit of God is already present.
As you read, hold this: Before there was anything to see, the Spirit of God was already there.
Context Other creation stories, and this one
The nations around Israel told creation stories of their own, and in those stories the gods fight, and the world gets built from whatever is left when the fighting is done. Genesis opens another way entirely. There is one God, and nobody fights Him. Before there is a single thing to see, His Spirit is already there over the water.

¹ In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
The Bible does not begin by arguing that God exists. It simply starts with Him, already there before the sentence begins, and everything else comes from His hand.
“The heavens and the earth” is a way of saying all of it: sky and ground, sea and stars, every part of it made by God.

² Now the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.
Look at what the earth is like at the start. It has no shape yet, and it is empty, and it is dark all the way down. If you had been there, you would have seen nothing at all.
But the verse does not end in the dark. It ends with God.
So the Spirit is not a late arrival. He did not begin on day one, or centuries later. He is God, and He is already here in verse 2, before there is light or land or a single living thing. Before anyone could see a thing, He was already near.
And He is not idle over that dark water. He is rachaph, pronounced rah-KHAHF. Strong's H7363, to hover, flutter over, brood over. This word pictures a mother eagle hovering close over her young, wings spread and near enough to touch. That is how God was over the dark water: not far off, but near. , leaning in close over a world that has nothing yet to show, and then He speaks, and light comes.
That is the first thing this week needs you to know. The Spirit is not a later idea. He is not a surprise saved for later pages. He is already on the first page, over water that has no light yet.

A psalm looks back at creation and says the Spirit is still doing this work.
"When You send Your Spirit, they are created, and You renew the face of the earth." Psalm 104:30 (BSB)
The Spirit who hovered over the empty water is the same Spirit who gives life now. He was there at the beginning, and He has not gone anywhere since. The first page and this page belong to the same Person.
Before there was anything to see, the Spirit of God was already there. He still is, close the way He was close then.

Pray to Close
The central truth: Before there was anything to see, the Spirit of God was already there.
Give thanks: thank Him that He hovered close over the dark instead of keeping His distance.
Ask: ask God to show you a place where His Spirit was near you and you could not see it.
Bring: bring Him the part of your life that still looks empty, and leave it with Him.
