Today’s Passage: Genesis 1:1–2
The Bible introduces the Holy Spirit on its very first page. Genesis opens on a world with no shape, no light, and no life. Yet right there, before anything has been made, the Spirit of God is already present. Before there was anything to see, the Spirit of God was already there.
Context Other creation stories, and this one
Ancient neighbors of Israel wrote their own creation myths. In those stories, rival gods wage war, and the world is constructed from the wreckage of their battles. Genesis presents a stark contrast. The text records one God, and He has no rivals. Before the physical universe takes shape, His Spirit already governs the waters.
Genesis 1:1 (BSB)
¹ In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
The Bible makes no attempt to prove the existence of God. It simply presents Him as the uncaused First Cause. He is present before the sentence begins, and everything else flows from His command. The phrase “the heavens and the earth” encompasses the entire physical universe: sky and ground, sea and stars. God built every part of it.

² Now the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.
The initial state of the earth is formless, empty, and entirely dark. A human observer would have seen nothing. Yet the record does not leave the earth in darkness. The Holy Spirit is present. He is God, active and engaged before the creation of light or land. He leans close over the dark water, rachaph, pronounced rah-KHAHF. Strong's H7363, to hover, flutter over, brood over. The original Hebrew word describes a bird of prey fluttering over her young, wings spread and close enough to touch. The Spirit positions Himself over the dark water in the same way. He remains near, ready to execute the spoken word of God and bring light to the void. with purpose over a world that has no features yet.
The text establishes a clear timeline. The Spirit of God is active from the opening moments of history. He stands over water that possesses no light, setting the stage for life.

The psalmist looks back at creation and observes the ongoing work of the Spirit.
"When You send Your Spirit, they are created, and You renew the face of the earth." Psalm 104:30 (BSB)
The Spirit who hovered over the empty water continues to give life today. He stood present at the beginning, and He sustains the earth now. The Genesis account and this psalm describe the exact same Person.
The historical record shows that before there was anything to see, the Spirit of God was already there. You can rely on that same presence in your own life. Take a moment today to identify one difficult period from your past, out loud or on paper. Speak the truth over that memory, and acknowledge that God was already there, close and active, even when you could not see Him.
Pray to Close
Thank God that His Spirit hovered close over the dark instead of keeping His distance. Ask Him to reveal a specific time in your life when His Spirit stood near you, even when you could not perceive it. Bring Him any area of your life that still looks empty, and leave it securely in His hands.
