Today’s Passage: Hebrews 1:1–4
For hundreds of years, God spoke through His prophets. Men like Moses, Isaiah, and Jeremiah delivered His messages across centuries. Then God broke the pattern and spoke directly through His own Son. Jesus is God’s glory, shining. You are looking at the radiant light of the Creator Himself.
Context Prophets and the Son
Hebrews addresses Jewish believers steeped in the Old Testament Scriptures. They understood the ancient prophets spoke truth, pointing forward to a final revelation. The writer of Hebrews declares that this long story has reached its climax. The final chapter features the Son Himself.
Hebrews 1:1–2 (BSB)
¹ On many past occasions and in many different ways, God spoke to our fathers through the prophets. ² But in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the universe.
Observe the credentials of the Son long before Bethlehem. He made the universe. He existed in the beginning, possessing full authority before the world began.

³ The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His nature, upholding all things by His powerful word.
Consider sunlight. Sunlight brings the actual heat and brilliance of the sun directly to where you stand. The writer of Hebrews uses this exact logic. Yesterday’s passage called Jesus the image of the invisible God. Today, Hebrews builds the case with the evidence of light and its radiance, along with hot metal and its charaktēr, pronounced kah-rahk-TAIR. Strong's G5481, an exact mark or impression, the precise image stamped by a die. A steel die pressed into hot metal leaves an exact, permanent mark on a coin. It transfers the precise shape of the original die. Hebrews identifies Jesus as God’s stamp. When you examine Jesus, you see the absolute reality of God. . These concrete facts point to an undeniable verdict. Jesus is God Himself in human flesh.
The Son reveals God’s glory completely. He also sustains the entire universe, moment by moment, by the power of His spoken word.
Hebrews 1:3–4 (BSB)
After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. ⁴ So He became as far superior to the angels as the name He has inherited is excellent beyond theirs.
Look at the two historical facts recorded here. First, Jesus provided purification for sins on the cross. Second, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. Sitting is the posture of a king ruling over a completed work. The Old Testament priests remained standing in the Temple day after day, repeating the same sacrifices. Jesus took His seat on the throne. He finished His redeeming work forever.
Study notes Greater than Every Messenger
Angels serve as God’s messengers. The entire first chapter of Hebrews establishes a firm verdict on their status compared to Christ. Jesus outranks every angel by right of His eternal nature. He possesses ultimate authority as the Creator.

Prophets spoke about God. Angels serve before God. Jesus stands entirely apart from both as the radiant Creator walking among humanity. Because He possesses the very nature of the Father, He deserves your absolute worship. Take time today to speak to Jesus in prayer with the exact same reverence you give to God the Father. Acknowledge Him as the King who upholds your life by His powerful word.
Pray to Close
Pray directly to the Son of God today, thanking Him for securing your purification on the cross. Confess any tendency to treat Him as a mere teacher or distant historical figure. Ask Him to open your eyes to the overwhelming reality of His glory. Acknowledge His power over the universe and submit your daily decisions to His finished authority.
