Today’s Passage: Colossians 1:15–20
Paul writes from a Roman prison to a small church in Colossae. False teachers have infiltrated the congregation. They call Jesus great, but they refuse to call Him God. They demote Him to a created being, a mere stepping stone to the divine. Paul responds with absolute clarity. He presents the evidence of Christ’s true identity. Jesus made everything and holds it together. He was never made.
Context They shrank Him
The church at Colossae faced a subtle threat. False teachers accepted Jesus as a historical figure, a wise man, or a spiritual guide. They stripped away His supremacy. They reduced Him to a single link in a long chain of spiritual beings. Paul answers this downgrade with facts. He presents Jesus as fully God. He places the true Christ in plain view, letting the reality of His deity stand as its own defense.

¹⁵ The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. ¹⁶ For in Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through Him and for Him. ¹⁷ He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.
Jesus is the exact representation of God. He is the image of the invisible Creator, the prōtotokos, pronounced pro-TOT-oh-kos. Strong's G4416, firstborn, the one holding first rank and honor. This word establishes supreme rank over all creation. Verse 16 states Jesus created everything. The builder of the universe stands apart from the things He built. He holds absolute command over creation because He designed it. over all creation. The God you cannot see with your physical eyes steps into history as a Person you can see.
Look at the inventory in verse 16. Heaven and earth. Visible things and invisible things. Thrones, dominions, rulers, and authorities. Every molecule and galaxy came into existence through Him and for Him. Jesus stands outside that list. He is the Creator who wrote the list.
Verse 17 presents another concrete claim. Jesus exists before all things. In Him, all things hold together right this second. The universe requires a Sustainer. Gravity and atomic forces operate because His hands maintain them.

¹⁸ And He is the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning and firstborn from among the dead, so that in all things He may have preeminence. ¹⁹ For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him, ²⁰ and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through the blood of His cross.
Paul shifts his focus from the cosmos to the church. Jesus directs His people exactly as a head directs a body. He stands as the first to conquer the grave and enter eternal life. Every person who places their trust in Him will follow Him into that resurrection.
Verse 19 delivers a final verdict on His identity. All of God’s fullness dwells in this one Man. You find God Himself, completely and entirely, residing in Jesus.
Verse 20 explains how this absolute power impacts you today. The Creator who engineered the stars secured peace between you and God. He accomplished this transaction with His own blood, poured out on a cross. The Architect of the universe reached into your reality and brought you near.

The apostle John opens his Gospel account with identical evidence. He confirms the precise origin and identity of Jesus.
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made, and without Him nothing was made that has been made." John 1:1–3 (BSB)
The evidence points to a single conclusion. Jesus is God. He holds the universe together, and He holds your life together. Take a physical step to remember this truth today. Write out the sentence “Jesus is God, and He holds everything together, including me” on a piece of paper. Place that paper exactly where you will see it most often.
Pray to Close
Bring your thoughts directly to the Creator who holds your life together. Thank God that the Sovereign who commands the stars reached into human history to secure your peace. Acknowledge any moments where you have treated Jesus as a mere teacher or a minor figure in your life. Ask Him to give you clear eyes to see His absolute supremacy and to trust Him with every detail of your day.
