Today’s Passage: Ephesians 1:13–14
Paul is writing to a church in the city of Ephesus. He has just spent twelve verses listing what God has done for His people. Today we reach the end of that list, and the Holy Spirit is standing there. It is only two verses, so we can walk slowly.
To be on probation means being watched to see whether you will last.
As you read, hold this: You are not on probation. God has already put His own mark on you.
Context What a seal was
A seal in Paul’s world was not a sticker. You softened a lump of wax and pressed it onto a letter, a jar, or a door. Then you stamped the wax with the ring you wore on your finger. The ring left your own design behind.
Anyone who walked past learned two things at once. They learned who owned this. And they learned that nobody had opened it. Breaking another person’s seal was a crime.
So a seal was never decoration. It was an owner saying, out loud and in wax, this is mine.

¹³ And in Him, having heard and believed the word of truth—the gospel of your salvation—you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,
Watch the order in that verse. Heard. Believed. Sealed. There is no waiting room in between, and no trial period.
Now notice who did the sealing. Paul does not say you sealed yourself. He says you were sealed. Somebody else pressed the ring down, and it was not you.
Then notice what the seal is made of. Not a feeling. Not a certificate on a wall. God marked His people with a Person, the promised Holy Spirit. Earlier in this series we heard God promise to put His Spirit inside people. This verse is that promise kept, and the mark on you is God Himself.

Greek: ἀρραβών (arrabōn), pronounced ar-rah-BONE. Strong’s G728.
This was not church language. It was money language. An arrabōn was the first payment on a purchase, handed over in advance. It was not a gift on the side. It was part of the actual price, paid early. Once the buyer laid it down, the deal was binding, and the rest was coming.
Old Greek business papers are full of the word. And it never died out. Modern Greek still uses a form of it for an engagement ring.
Now read verse 14 again holding that. God did not send a promise about the Spirit. He sent the Spirit as the promise. The first payment on everything God has said He will do is God Himself, living in His people.
Three more words in that verse are worth slowing down for.
An inheritance is what already has your name on it, waiting for the day you receive it. Paul does not say we might get one someday. He says the Spirit is the first payment on ours.
Redemption means being bought back and set free. Verse 14 says the Spirit stays until that day comes. So the day is coming, and He does not leave before it. A first payment is not taken back. It becomes part of the whole.
Possession sounds cold in English. It is not cold here. It means God looked at a people and said, those are Mine. The wax under the ring says exactly the same thing.
Then look at the last line. All of this happens to the praise of His glory. Your safety is not finally about you. It is about Him. That is the very reason it holds. If keeping you depended on you, you would be right to be nervous. It does not. It depends on Him.

Jesus said this same thing years earlier, in plainer words.
"I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them out of My hand." John 10:28 (BSB)
To snatch is to grab something and rip it away by force. Jesus says nobody can. Not anyone else, and not you either, because you are not the one holding on. He is.
Paul says the same thing from the other direction in Philippians 1:6. God started the good work, God keeps it, and God will finish it.
None of this is permission to live carelessly. A sealed letter still gets carried. A bought field still gets worked.
It is permission to stop auditioning, which means trying out over and over, hoping to be chosen. You can obey God today because you are His, not in order to become His.

The central truth: You are not on probation. God sealed His people with His own Spirit, and that Spirit is the first payment on everything else God has promised.
Give thanks: thank God that He did the sealing, instead of asking you to hold on tight enough.
Confess: tell God plainly where you have been living as though His love had to be earned.
Ask: ask the Holy Spirit to make you sure of what He is, so that you can rest today.

Today’s decision: I will name one thing I have been doing to earn God’s approval. Today I will do that same thing as a thank-you instead.
