Pray to Begin
Ask: ask the Holy Spirit to show you who Jesus really is, not just what He did.
Give thanks: God did not stay silent. He sent His own Son to speak for Him.
Bring: any quiet doubt about who Jesus is. Bring it into the light today.
Today’s Passage: Hebrews 1:1–4
For hundreds of years, God spoke through prophets. Moses. Isaiah. Jeremiah. Many men, many times, many ways. Then everything changed. God spoke again, but not through another messenger. This time through His own Son.
As you read, hold this: Jesus is not a copy of God’s glory. He is God’s glory, shining.
Context Prophets, then Son
Hebrews was written to Jewish believers who knew their Bible well. They knew God had spoken through prophets for centuries. Real words. True words. But always partial, always pointing forward. Hebrews opens by saying that long story just reached its final chapter. Not another prophet with a message. The Son Himself, in person.
Hebrews 1:1–2 (BSB)
¹ On many past occasions and in many different ways, God spoke to our fathers through the prophets. ² But in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the universe.
Notice what this Son already did before Bethlehem. He made the universe. Stars, oceans, ants, galaxies: all through Him. This is not a man who became important later. This is the One who was already there, before anything was made.

³ The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His nature, upholding all things by His powerful word.
Radiance means light shining out from something. Think of sunlight. Sunlight is not a copy of the sun, sent down to visit Earth. Sunlight is the sun, reaching you. That is the picture here.
Word study "Exact representation": charaktēr (Hebrews 1:3)
Greek: χαρακτήρ (charaktēr), pronounced kah-rahk-TAIR. Strong’s G5481.
In the ancient world, a charaktēr was a mark stamped by a die onto a coin. Press the die into hot metal. The coin carries the exact image. Not a rough sketch. Not a family resemblance. A precise copy. Hebrews says Jesus is God’s charaktēr. Look at Jesus, and you are looking at the exact stamp of who God is.
Charaktēr: the exact stamp. Not a shadow of God. Not a lesser version of God. The precise mark of who God is. Wearing skin. Walking on dust.
Yesterday’s passage called Jesus the image of the invisible God: a portrait you could see. Hebrews reaches for a different picture: light and its shining, metal and its stamp. Both point the same direction. Jesus does not merely show us what God is like. Jesus is what God is.
Keep reading verse 3. The Son does not only reveal God’s glory. He also holds up the whole universe, every moment, by His own powerful word. Then something remarkable happens.
Hebrews 1:3–4 (BSB)
After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. ⁴ So He became as far superior to the angels as the name He has inherited is excellent beyond theirs.
Two things happen here, and both matter. First, Jesus provided purification for sins. This is the cross. This is the price paid, the work only He could finish. Second, He sat down. Sitting is a king’s posture. It means the work is finished.
Priests in the Old Testament never sat down in the Temple. Their work was never finished. Jesus sits, because His work is.
Study notes Greater than every messenger
Ancient readers honored angels highly: God’s messengers, God’s armies. Hebrews spends its first chapter proving one thing. Jesus outranks every angel. Not because He earned a promotion. Because of who He has always been. The Son was never one more angel with a better assignment. He is the One angels were made to serve.

Prophets spoke about God. Angels serve before God. Jesus is not in either category. He is God’s own radiance, walking among us.

Pray to Close
The central truth: Jesus is not a lesser reflection of God. He is God, in exact and perfect likeness.
Praise: Jesus, You are not a copy or a shadow. You are the radiance of God’s own glory.
Confess: the small ways we have treated You as merely wise, merely good, merely helpful, instead of worshiping You as God.
Ask: for eyes to see You clearly today, and a heart that bows before who You truly are.
