Today’s Passage: Matthew 7:24-29
Jesus concludes three chapters of teaching on the mountain with a final picture. He presents two builders, two houses, and one storm. Every person on that hillside hears the identical words. The verdict rests entirely on their response. Build your life on the words of Jesus, and your house will stand when the storms arrive.
Matthew 7:24-25 (BSB)
²⁴ Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. ²⁵ The rain fell, the torrents raged, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because its foundation was on the rock.
The wise builder hears the instruction and puts it into practice. True belief requires immediate action. The storm still strikes this house. Jesus promises a house that holds together. He offers no immunity from the rain. The foundation determines survival.
Matthew 7:26-27 (BSB)
²⁶ But everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. ²⁷ The rain fell, the torrents raged, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell—and great was its collapse!”
The foolish builder hears the identical words. He agrees with the teaching. He leaves the work undone. On a sunny Tuesday, both houses look structurally sound. The severe weather exposes the foundation. Admiration without obedience guarantees a total collapse.
Context Sand that looks solid
The hills of Galilee feature dry riverbeds filled with packed sand during the summer months. The ground appears flat and firm. It offers an easy construction site. Winter rains transform those beds into violent torrents. A house built on that sand washes away completely. The sensible builder digs down to solid bedrock before laying a single stone.
Matthew 7:28-29 (BSB)
²⁸ When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were astonished at His teaching, ²⁹ because He taught as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.
Religious teachers of the first century cited older rabbis to validate their arguments. Jesus spoke on His own absolute authority. He stated, “But I tell you,” and the crowd recognized the jurisdiction of a King. You build your house on this specific voice. The rock beneath the wise man’s house is the literal word of the man speaking on this mountain.
The King spent this entire climb detailing a clean heart, a Father who sees in secret, a secure treasure, a narrow gate, and a willing provider. The entire discourse narrows to this final choice. The teacher Himself is the bedrock. Hearing Him and executing His commands secures your life to Him.
Study notes One foundation
Every wall of this Sermon rests on the identity of the King who spoke it. The apostle Paul makes the same case using direct terms.

There is exactly one rock. His name is Jesus. Anchor your life there, and the fiercest storm lacks the force to carry your house away.
Storms approach every house. The terrifying reality is spending decades building a life on loose soil that gives way under pressure. The rock stands ready right here. Jesus continues to speak, and He invites you to build on Him today. Identify one specific teaching from the Sermon on the Mount you already understand, and put it into practice before you go to sleep tonight.
Pray to Close
Approach Jesus in prayer and acknowledge His absolute exousia, pronounced ex-oo-SEE-ah. Strong's G1849, authority, rightful power, the right to act. This word denotes the inherent right to act, possessed entirely on one’s own rather than borrowed from another source. First-century scribes merely repeated the rulings of older teachers. Jesus spoke possessing His own right, making His words strong enough to hold the weight of a human life. as the King on the mountain. Confess the times you have admired His teachings while leaving the actual obedience undone. Ask Him for the resolve to yield one specific area of your life to His commands today.
