The House That Stands

Today’s Passage: Matthew 7:24-29

For three chapters, Jesus has taught the crowd on the mountain. Now He finishes with one last picture: two builders, two houses, one storm. Everyone on the hillside has heard the very same words. The only question left is what they will do with them.

As you read, hold this: Build your life on the words of Jesus, and it will stand when the storms come.

Matthew 7:24-25 (BSB)

²⁴ Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. ²⁵ The rain fell, the torrents raged, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because its foundation was on the rock.

The wise builder does not only listen. He hears, and then he acts. Notice that the storm still comes to his house. Jesus never promises a life with no rain. He promises a house that holds. The difference is not the weather. The difference is the foundation.

Matthew 7:26-27 (BSB)

²⁶ But everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. ²⁷ The rain fell, the torrents raged, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell—and great was its collapse!”

The foolish builder heard the same words. He may have nodded along and liked them. But he never built his life on them. On a calm day, both houses look the same. The storm is what tells them apart. Words we admire but never obey cannot hold us up.

²⁸ When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were astonished at His teaching, ²⁹ because He taught as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.

The teachers of that day quoted other teachers. Jesus quoted no one above Himself. He simply said, “But I tell you,” and the words landed like a King’s. The crowd felt it at once. This is the voice you build your house on. The rock under the wise man’s house is the word of the One speaking on the mountain.

Think back over the whole climb up this mountain. The King has shown us a new kind of heart, a Father who sees in secret, a treasure that never rusts, a narrow gate, a good gift for all who ask. Every part of it comes down to this last picture. The One who taught it all is Himself the rock. To hear Him and do what He says is to build your life on Him.

The storms are coming for every house, the wise and the foolish alike. That is not the frightening part of the story. The frightening part is building for years on ground that cannot hold. The hopeful part is that the rock is right here, still speaking, and He is glad for you to build on Him today.

1. Which of Jesus’ words have you admired, yet not actually acted on?

2. What is one thing you could do today to build your life on what He said, and not just agree with it?

Decision of the day: Take one teaching from the Sermon on the Mount that you already know, and actually do it today.

Pray to Close

The central truth: Build your life on the words of Jesus, and it will stand when the storms come.

Praise: praise Jesus for teaching with an authority (ἐξουσία) exousia, pronounced ex-oo-SEE-ah. Strong's G1849, authority, rightful power, the right to act. This word means the right to act, all your own, not borrowed from someone else. The scribes just repeated older teachers. Jesus spoke with His own right, so His words are strong enough to build a life on. no one else has, the King on the mountain.

Confess: confess the words of His you have heard and admired, but left undone.

Yield: yield one part of your life today to what He actually said, and start building there.
