Known by the Fruit

Today’s Passage

Jesus nears the end of His sermon on the mountain. He recently described two roads and two gates. Now He examines two realities that look identical on the outside but differ entirely on the inside: two kinds of teachers and two kinds of hearts. He gives the crowd a standard for recognizing truth. A tree reveals its nature by its fruit, and knowing Jesus requires absolute surrender, far beyond simply repeating His name.

Matthew 7:15 (BSB)

¹⁵ Beware of false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.

Jesus issues a warning. Certain teachers appear gentle and safe. Beneath the surface, they harbor a ravenous appetite to exploit the vulnerable. A wolf wears wool as camouflage, but eventually, its predatory nature takes over.

You need a reliable method to see past the disguise. Jesus provides a concrete test.

Matthew 7:16-20 (BSB)

¹⁶ By their fruit you will recognize them. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? ¹⁷ Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. ¹⁸ A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. ¹⁹ Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. ²⁰ So then, by their fruit you will recognize them.

You lack the ability to look inside a human heart. You possess the ability to observe the actions a life produces over time. People dress up their words. True Fruit (καρπός) karpos, pronounced kar-POSS. Strong's G2590, fruit, what a tree or vine produces. Fruit grows as the natural output of the tree’s identity. A genuine life with God produces good fruit as the direct result of a heart completely surrendered to Him. The fruit provides the visible evidence of that internal transformation. defies counterfeiting. A thornbush produces thorns, regardless of its claims to the contrary.

Jesus establishes a direct connection between the root and the crop. The fruit reveals the existing condition of the tree. A transformed tree yields a transformed harvest. He continually points you to Himself as the source of that transformation.

Matthew 7:21 (BSB)

²¹ Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of My Father in heaven.

The warning now targets the listener. A person can recite all the correct theological vocabulary. You can publicly address Jesus as “Lord” while remaining completely estranged from Him. Belonging to Christ requires a genuine relationship.

Matthew 7:22-23 (BSB)

²² Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ ²³ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness!’

These sobering words demand your absolute attention. The tragedy hinges on one brief sentence: “I never knew you.” Jesus states plainly that a relationship never existed. These individuals invoked His name to perform spectacular deeds, yet they remained strangers to Him. A true heart outweighs impressive accomplishments.

Hope anchors this severe warning. God remains entirely accessible. Jesus issues this caution to draw you closer, inviting you to know Him and experience His profound love. Those who belong to Jesus rest securely in His hands. They will hear only a welcome on that final day.

The ultimate test examines the reality of your relationship with Jesus. Every good thing in your life grows from that single root. Take five quiet minutes today to speak directly to Jesus as a personal Savior. Tell Him you surrender your life to Him, and ask Him to cultivate genuine fruit in your daily actions.

Praise Jesus for knowing His people intimately and holding them secure. Confess any areas where you have relied on your own achievements to earn His favor. Ask Him to establish a firm foundation in your heart and to produce undeniable fruit that points others to His truth.
