Today’s Passage: Matthew 7:13-14
Jesus nears the end of His sermon on the mount and presents a clear verdict. He lays out two gates, two roads, and two destinations. He commands you to enter by the narrow gate, the way that requires deliberate action but leads directly to life.
Context Two gates, two roads
Ancient cities built walls with different entrances. A wide gate accommodated heavy traffic and large carts. A small side gate allowed only single-file foot traffic. The crowd listening to Jesus knew exactly how these two gates functioned.

¹³ Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.
Jesus issues a direct command: “Enter.” He describes the broad road first. It offers plenty of room. A massive crowd walks it comfortably side by side. He identifies the destination clearly. The broad road leads to destruction. The popular way guarantees a fatal end.
The stenos, pronounced steh-NOSS. Strong's G4728, narrow, tight, constricted, hemmed in. The original word describes a path squeezed between rocks. A narrow gate permits only one person at a time. You leave the crowd behind, and you leave your baggage behind. You step through the entrance exactly as you are. gate forces an individual choice. You step through it alone, empty-handed, and honest. You must make the decision to walk through it yourself.

¹⁴ But small is the gate and narrow the way that leads to life, and only a few find it.
Jesus contrasts the broad road with the small gate and the narrow way. Fewer travelers choose this route. He states a concrete fact: only a few find it. The word “find” points to a deliberate search. A small gate requires you to look for it intentionally. It waits for a seeker to discover it. This specific road leads to life.
Study notes The gate has a name
Jesus identifies the gate explicitly in John’s Gospel. He establishes the facts clearly.
"I am the gate. If anyone enters through Me, he will be saved. He will come in and go out and find pasture." John 10:9 (BSB)
The narrow gate represents a Person. Jesus identifies Himself as the entrance, and He stands ready to receive you.
Jesus extends a clear invitation. The gate is narrow, but it remains unlocked. It bears His name, and His door stands open. Today, make a deliberate choice to step through that narrow gate. Turn away from the crowded road, speak an honest prayer of surrender to Him, and take your first firm step on the path that leads to life.
Pray to Close
Pray to the Lord and acknowledge Him as the only gate that leads to life. Confess the times you have chosen the popular, crowded road out of convenience. Ask God to give you the courage to choose the narrow way today and the endurance to follow Jesus faithfully every day after.
